Teeing Off: Better Round – Phil’s Major Win or Furyk’s 59?

Jeff Newton

We thought we had the 2013 round of the year all figured out: Phil Mickelson’s legendary final round 66 to come from five shots off the lead and win his fifth career major. And with that signature shot he hit on the 17th with his X Hot 3Deep, knocking it on in two from 308 out, into the wind…come on. Case closed. Game over. Tie a ribbon on it and call it day.

It was such a brilliant performance that he all but won the championship while the last groups still had 4 holes to play! We can’t remember anything like that happening in a major; he posted 66 on a day when every other player in the final 10 groups failed to break 70. How could anyone top a round like THAT this year?

Then last Friday Jim Furyk put up these ridiculous numbers: 14 of 14 fairways, 17 of 18 greens, 11 birdies, 1 eagle, and a 59 for the record books with an FT Optiforce Driver in the bag. By posting 59, arguably the most historic number in golf, Furyk joined the Tour’s most exclusive club, becoming just the sixth player ever to shoot the lowest round in PGA Tour history, and the first to do it with a bogey on his scorecard. Wow!

It was some of the most compelling golf we’ve seen in a long time, as the 2010 FedExCup winner got up to 11-under for the day through 13 holes and then chased history over the final hour of his round. He needed a birdie on the last hole, and he got it in spectacular fashion, sticking his second shot to just over three feet and draining the putt to add his name to the 59 fraternity. And oh by the way, no one else shot lower than 65 that day.

It’s hard to pick which round was better, since they’ll probably go down as two of the greatest rounds ever played. That’s why we’re leaving the voting to you:
