4 Tour Notes – Monty’s Major With SR 3, Big Bertha Alpha

Jeff Newton

Playing with an SR 3 Golf Ball and a Big Bertha Alpha Driver, Colin Montgomerie blew away the field with a brilliant final round 65 to lock up his first career major win at the Sr. PGA Championship. Here’s a look at Monty’s victory, his equipment and a few of our other favorite Tour Notes from Memorial Day Weekend.

1. Monty’s Major Win – WITB

Here’s some of the Callaway and Odyssey equipment Colin used at the Sr. PGA Championship:

Big Bertha Alpha Driver (10.5-degree)

X2 Hot 3-wood

X2 Hot Pro Hybrid

An SR 3 Golf Ball

Odyssey Tank Cruiser #7 Putter

His driver is 45.25” long, with 1” tipping and an Aldila Phenom XL Shaft. It has a Neutral Directional Bias and and a Standard Loft Adjustability.

This adds yet another huge victory for our Big Bertha Lineup. Already this year, Big Bertha and Big Bertha Alpha have been the #1 Selling Driver Brand in Golf for both February and March, won multiple tournaments on the PGA Tour, and we can add a major championship to the trophy case.

It also marks the second major win for SR 3 Golf Balls (LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship), and another Tour win for our Speed Regime lineup.

Congratulations, Colin! Well played.

2. Tank Cruiser Stays Hot

Momentum, momentum, momentum. That’s the story behind Odyssey’s new counterbalance Tank Cruiser Putters that are growing in popularity and winning on multiple Tours. Lydia Ko set the tone when she used a Tank Cruiser V-Line to win last month on the LPGA Tour and Montgomerie pulled away on Sunday by making one putt after another with his #7 model.

These putters offer adjustable weighting in both the head and at the counterbalance level to help players find the right balance for their most consistent stroke. The performance speaks for itself, as two weeks ago there were 32 Tank Cruisers in play across the major worldwide Tours. Now that’s Tour validation.

You can learn more about these new putters in this Odyssey video.

3. Jacobson Contends at Colonial

Our buddy Freddie Jacobson made things VERY interesting on Sunday at the Crowne Plaza Invitational behind a hot putter that almost got him into a playoff. He led the field in strokes gained – putting for the week with an Odyssey Versa #7 Black/White/Black model and posted a final round 67 to finish T3, one shot off the winning score. The guy’s been one of the best putters on Tour for years, and we got to see him at his best over the weekend. Great playing, Freddie!

4. Kirk Moves Into Apex Pro Irons

Sitting at 8th place on the current FedExCup standings, Chris Kirk is well on his way to a career year on Tour and last week at Colonial he made an equipment switch that could help him pick up another win in the 2013-2014 season.  Chris moved into new Apex Pro Irons (2-9) that he’d been working on at home for a few weeks.

The 2-iron has a KBS 120 shaft and the 3-9 irons have KBS 125 shafts. He played rock solid golf with his new irons in the bag and even posted a 64 in the second round. Speaking of rock solid, when it comes to making cuts Chris is a now a perfect 17-for-17 during the wraparound season. How’s that for consistency?!

And oh yeah, before we go we want to remind you about the Big Big Bertha Payday we announced last Thursday. Someone’s going to win the same amount of money as Phil Mickelson’s check at Pinehurst next month. If Lefty wins, that’s up to $1.5 million. Yep, well over a million bucks! As our own @sdrhicg might say, you should totally check it out on our Big Bertha Payday homepage.

Have a great week everybody!
